5 Benefits of Physical Activity

Imani Sankofa

What comes to mind when you think of the benefits of exercising or physical activity?

Most likely your answer is “losing weight” or “bulking up” and that’s a fairly common response among people who exercise on a regular basis or who would like to exercise on a regular basis. However, what about all of the other benefits to regular physical activity? Although there are many benefits to working out I believe the 5 biggest benefits to staying active are:

1. Improve Mood - Exercising makes me feel better overall. I feel better about myself as a person and better about my body. During exercise, the brain triggers the release of endorphins from the pituitary gland. These "happy chemicals" create feelings of well being, power and control. So when you're feeling down, just exercise even its just for a little while. Exercising will make you feel better.

2. Clarity - If I'm working on a project and come to an impasse during the process, I take a short break and do simple exercises. It may be a short walk or simple stretching, which helps to relax my body. This simple technique provides me with a moment of clarity and I'm able to get the breakthrough I need to complete my task.

3. Meditation - I sometimes use exercising as a form of meditation. Walking meditation is a wonderful way of transforming something that we do every day into a deeply healing, deeply nourishing and enjoyable tool for our awakening.

4. Increase Energy - Ever feel tired physically and/or emotionally? You may need to exercise. Exercise is a great way to increase your energy level and fight off feelings of fatigue. Just a few minutes a day of exercise can really transform how you feel and how much energy you have to put toward getting through your day.

5. Improve Self Esteem - Exercising or consistent physical activity can lead to higher self esteem. The observable results--better muscle tone, loss of body fat--are just part of the reason why people who work out feel better about themselves. Overall good health and body function leads to greater productivity at work and in the pursuit of pleasurable activities. As you accomplish more, you feel like a successful person who is in control of his or her life.
