When Did We Start Celebrating Obesity?

Imani Sankofa

I came across this page today...Miss Plus America Pageant.... Contestants must wear size 14W+ in order to participate. The Pageant also has a teen division starting from size 12+.

I don't even know how to respond to this.

I believe everyone should feel good about themselves. However, is celebrating being unhealthy really the way to go? I think not.

I remember when I weighed 236 lbs. I didn't think I was pretty. I didn't feel pretty or sexy at all. Instead, my knees hurt all the time. My breathing became so labored that I had to get a breathing machine. I developed sleep apnea and a severe case of acid reflux, which later damaged my vocal cords. I remember near asphyxiation due to vomiting in my sleep. I hated shopping for clothes and grew tired of being the butt of the fat jokes. My self-esteem was seriously in the gutter, and I was emotionally broken. No, I didn't find anything to celebrate at all.

Ok, so let's assume that none of these ladies have the same issues I experienced. Let's assume that they love themselves more than life itself. Let's assume that there are no fat jokes and their self-esteem is on point. What about their health?

So what message does this pageant send to our women and girls? A healthy message? I think not.
